With that said, Modern does have an extensive banned list, so be sure to look that up if you’re looking to get into Modern. Cards never “rotate out” of Modern (unlike Standard and Extended, which rotate sets out every year). I believe it includes every set from 8th Edition forward. Modern is the next largest format and basically includes anything that’s been printed with a “modern-” (post-8th Edition)-style card frame. It currently contains all the Expert-level sets and Core sets from Zendikar forward. Standard currently contains: Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Avacyn Restored, Magic 2013, Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash.Įxtended nowadays is essentially the last four years of sets. Standard basically means the last two years of regular expansions (Expert-level sets and Core sets). (Constructed just means you build your deck in advance of the event, as opposed to Limited events like Draft and Sealed where you build a deck once you get there.) Standard, Extended, Modern, Legacy and Vintage are different formats of 60-card Constructed Magic.
